Artist's Comments
I'm not sure if I put this in the right category, so if you feel the need to correct me, please do.
It felt so good to be drawing again, and I'm quite pleased with the turnout. I took a bit of liberty with the hair because I'm not the best hair artist and was trying to get used to it. Umm, what else. The tip of the nose still bothers me a bit, but not enough to bother me for the rest of my life, and to the left side of the picture there's one part by Frodo's neck that I don't think I darkened enough. And the highlight on that one fold is probably a bit too light. I'll probably change it later but not bother reposting. If you see strange looking spots on his head, I'm afraid it's because my stupid fixer started "spraying" droplets instead of mist Overall I'm rather pleased with it!! I was so afraid that it wouldn't look like him. Please full-view... trust me. 3 WIP in scraps! Reference: [link] Tools: 2H - 6B pencils, charcoal for background, paintbrushes for blending Hmm... now I'm wondering what to do next... |

As stated, yeah, the nose is a bit off. It curves up too much at the end. I fixed it a couple of times but for fear of ruining it I'm leaving it now.

I was a little unsure on the background. I chose the charcoal because it was the darkest and most uniform -- much more so than pencil, at least. Would you have an recommendations for fixing/if I could have started over?? [I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but also the paper was a lot rougher than I supposed it to be and wasn't entirely charcoal paper...

I found out from doing "Christy Turlington 2" ([link]) that a solid background is a very tricky thing. On paper, the background for that drawing looks fine (the drawing in general looks a lot better than the scanned image), but the light from scanning the image reflected off the indentations left by my pencil. This isn't precisely the same problem you had - because you worked with charcoal whereas I worked with a standard graphite mechanical pencil.
But, I learned a lesson. Solid backgrounds can wreck havoc with a picture in a scanner. I'm not making that mistake again.
Furthermore, charcoal and graphite produce different textures. So, when you are mixing the media, keep this in mind. There will be a dichotomy between the two.
I think that's your problem here, more than anything. The background and the image of Frodo don't mesh as well as they could.
Hope that helped.

I like that, while it looks like Frodo from the films (aka Elijah Wood) it doesn't at the same time. That's very clever; makes it seem more original that way.
It came out great, glad you finished it!
